How it all Started!

The Writers Assistants Network is for up and coming writers, executive assistants, and literary assistants that are focused on pursuing careers in primetime television.

A few years back I was challenged by one of my mentors that’s currently a Co-EP on NCIS: LA to find and network with other support staffers. Like many others, I had no clue where to start. While I was in grad school at Loyola Marymount University, I interned at KO Paper Products and knowing how many shows they had, I reached out to a PA on Sleepy Hallow. We met up for drinks and discussed an idea that I had to have an event for support staffers that were currently working in Primetime TV. We both sent out a bunch of emails to our networks and within 48 hours, we had a guest list of over 250 people. At that moment, we outgrew our space, so I had to find a way to reserve the entire bar for the night, which would be fairly expensive if we didn’t reach our bar guarantee. Luckily a friend from Justified saved the day and was able to get us sponsored by Santa Clarita Studios.

The night was a total success; we had over 300 people come out. We gave away swag from The Walking Dead, Ted, Sleepy Hallow, and other shows and companies. Today we are sponsored by a software startup called SoCreate, which is developing new screenwriting software that can seriously change the way we write.

The true purpose of this group is to give back to the people that keep Hollywood running. It’s not just our bosses that are important, we’re important too because without us the ship really would sink.
